Rina Green’s debut album Universe 25, described by the band as “songs observing the shortcomings of humanity from an alien perspective”, takes its name from John Calhoun’s 1972 over-population experiment featuring an animal model of societal collapse. In his experiment Calhoun created a mortality-inhibiting environment for mice with food and water replenished to support any increase in population. However, after population peaked at 2,200 mice, it exhibited a variety of abnormal, often destructive behaviors. By the 600th day, the population was on its way to extinction. Calhoun characterized the social breakdown observed in his experiment as a “spiritual death” and saw the fate of the population of mice as a metaphor for the potential fate of man.
The album that features Liam Bradley (Van Morrison, Ronan Keating) on drums and Vinz Lamagna (Mysteries of the Revolution, Twisted Tongues) on guitars was recorded on funds collected via a crowdfunding campaign and is distinctive for its “remote” mode of recording, which involved musicians recording their parts in home studios. The resulting tracks were thereafter arranged by the singer songwriter Alyona and the bassist Sasha Titov (Aquarium, Kino, Sergey Kuryokhin & Pop Mechanics) and sent off for mixing to Jerry Boys (The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Shadows, The Rolling Stones, REM, Level 42, Everything but the Girl, Buena Vista Social Club).
